Hey everyone, welcome to Philly dances where we visit with all the awesome people creating beautiful art and working hard in Philadelphia's dance community. I'm your host, Emily Brunner. I was thinking the other day about communities, about how we live in this really big world and we find ways to make it smaller by joining up with people around us. We form countries, we've formed cities, we form neighborhoods, schools, and even smaller than that, we form families and groups of friends and we find people who like some of the same things that we like. And together we're able to make these really great small communities of which we can all feel like we belong. 11 years ago I signed my oldest daughter up for a dance class. I was about to have my second child and I was looking for something for her to do, an activity that would get us out of the house and break up the long stretches of time that happen when you have a newborn at home. So I signed her up for a dance class and I had no idea at the time that that would be the first step for me and my family to become members of this amazing dance community here in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Sometimes people ask me if I am a dancer or if I was a dancer and I absolutely was not ever a dancer. When I was younger growing up I never learned to do a cartwheel. I was never even flexible enough to be able to touch my toes while I'm standing up. So unfortunately I was never able to experience what it was like to be a young dancer in the community. But ever since I signed my daughter up for that very first dance class, I've become a dance mom, a dance fan and also a dance photographer. And I really want to learn more. I want to meet people. I want to meet everybody who is a part of this dance community here in Philadelphia. The people on stage, the people backstage, the people teaching in studios, the people working in stores and in offices. I want to hear everyone's stories. And I want to bring those stories to you too. I want to hear your stories. So that's what the Philly dances podcast is going to be about. We are going to be bringing stories to each other, sharing our experiences and learning from each other and inspiring each other. I'm so thankful that you're here with me and I can't wait to get started.
